EG 2018 Day 2 Recap
Friday morning kicked off with some patio mingling and coffee before returning to the auditorium for Session 3: The Good Fight. Tony Trischka opened the session, delighting us with his dizzying banjo skills (joined by Jill Sobule and ETHEL), followed by Rick Smolan encouraging us with some positivity on the state of journalism in America. Next, we were refreshed to hear Lee-Anne Walters share with us the fight currently happening in the US for clean water. Amber and Marcus Capone then took the stage, sharing their inspiring story getting on the right path and working hard to stay there. EG alumni magician Eric Mead introduced us to Mahdi "The Magician" Gilbert who wowed the audience with his magic, rising above physical challenges that many saw as a barrier to performing magic.

EG 2018 Day 1 Recap
Day 1 of this year's gathering started with an emotional ride. Corin Lee of ETHEL delighted the EG community, kicking things off with a spirited violin solo. Stephen Smith followed with a moving presentation on his work with the UK National Holocaust Center, including an interview with survivor Renee Firestone. Richard Freund then took us further back in time, reminding us what archaeology is really about. Next, Shari Stocker and Jack Davis made us rethink history and Carol Guzy shared her powerful photography that moved many to tears. Faith and Peter D'Aluisio brought us into their battle with Mother Nature (in the form of the Sonoma County fires) before the first break.

NASA Astro-nette Cady Coleman on (and at) EG Conference
“EG is a place that I feel at home and where I get to have real conversations with fascinating folks from all arenas as opposed to star-struck PR-like conversations.
Highly recommended.” — Cady Coleman, NASA Astronaut

Ice Sculpter Tim Linhart on (and at) EG Conference
“The importance of the EG conference can not be overstated. When the news cycle and public discourse is focused on all that is going wrong, EG is focused on what is hopeful, uplifting, interesting and truly astounding.
The whole cast of characters, both presenters and attendees, is like the best collection of Christmas presents imaginable. Each one is a hidden treasure just waiting to be asked what they are about. Their stories range the breadth of human experience and the most bizarre, unique, and unexpected.
My mind was stretched and expanded and the EG experience was a great catalyst to reinvigorate my creative process. My next project will be to build a frozen cello using my own blood.
The fact that EG organiser Michael Hawley managed to find even me hiding under a frozen rock on the opposite side of the planet is evidence of the extent to which they are willing to go to make the conference interesting and diverse. “ — Tim Linhart

Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!’s Peter Sagal on (and at) EG Conference
“If I were to imagine Heaven, it would involve the company of interesting, diverse and intelligent men and women, each with a remarkable story to tell, and a twenty minute limit on the telling so it’s never too long before a bathroom break.
Plus, there would be really great food, copious wine and beer, magicians, circus acts, photographers, artists, students, grandparents, actors, writers, programmers, people who I’ve longed to meet for decades and people I’d never heard of.
Also, if we’re just going to go for it here, it would be in a fantastically beautiful little town near the coast so if you got tired of just sitting around and listening, talking, and eating you could go for a run on the beach.
All this means that every time I attend EG I wonder if in fact I’ve died and gone to a reward I never thought I’d deserve. Then, every time it’s over, I realize that, tragically, I’m still doomed to the real world.”

Wildlife Filmmaker John Aitchison on (and at) EG Conference
“I have attended a number of conferences but never anything so wonderful as EG. We have talked about little besides EG since.
The whole event was brilliantly organised and our fellow audience members were as fascinating as I had heard. The quirky artwork/photography was a delight – where else could I have had my deep desire to be a caveman revealed to the world, then have lunch with an astronaut and a man who builds robotic flies?
Thank you for working so hard to provide us with so much inspiration.”

Butterscotch on (and at) EG Conference
“EG is like a camp for superheroes, all under one roof in beautiful Carmel! I’m amazed at how each and every one of the presenters blows my mind, but also touches my heart. During the breaks, I never know who I’m going to sit next to to or what conversation we will share, but engaging with people who are literally changing the world, or capturing earth’s beauty and sharing their interpretation, helps shift and enlighten my views and fills me with hope for the future! My EG experience fuels me with endless energy to create more music to inspire humans everywhere and reach any beings who may live beyond this world!”

Laurence Tribe on (and at) EG Conference
“EG is the most extraordinary conference Elizabeth and I have ever attended. At a time when we’re incessantly bombarded by the ambient noise of modern existence, numbed by political chaos and cynicism, immersed in bubbles of merely virtual interactions — a time when our minds and souls are hardened and closed off from one another and ourselves — the events and encounters at EG cleaned, refreshed and opened us to discoveries and experiences that brought awe and wonder back into our lives. All the superlatives in the world cannot describe what it feels like to open your mind, relax your body and let generosity overtake your heart” - Larry Tribe
