Born in West Point and raised in Novato, Yvonne earned a doctor of medicine degree from University of Washington and worked as a physician for more than a decade. She spent the following decade in the US Air Force, reaching the rank of Colonel before she retired. During her years in the USAF, she served as a liaison for the Space Shuttle mission STS-30 and as a doctor at NASA's Occupational Health Clinic for two years. Having cleared more than a few impressive hurdles, she was then selected for astronaut training by NASA in 1996.
