Inventor, designer, architect Ernő Rubik's creation — his eponymous cube — has been touched by one seventh of the people on the planet. And ignited a spark of curiosity in everyone who has touched it.
Rubik was born in Budapest during World War II, the son of flight engineer and a poet. He began his career as an architect at age 27, and as a professor at the Budapest College of Applied Arts shortly after that. The first prototype of Rubik’s Cube was designed in 1974, and patented in 1975. As he put it: he was “searching to find a good task for his students.” Regarded as somewhat reclusive, he continues to work and play on architectural designs, and efforts for talented young engineers and industrial designers.
