Einstein studied the violin at Princeton, and when he gave up he said, you can't figure out human intuition and that's what makes them sound good. It also has to feel good: neck shape for feel, action (string height and spacing) getting all these right makes a good guitar. Guitar players usually don't do woodwork. Even the greatest musicians sometimes don't really know anything about how to fix or repair their guitars, but they know more than I do about what makes a good guitar. Musicians, not guitar makers, are who I've paid attention to. I've known how to make them for a long time but I continue to learn from musicians, that's what has guided me in my craft.
I have lived in Los Angeles since 1980. I've accomplished so much with this craft in my life. It will never get better than my dear friend George Harrison when we first met tell me he had played a guitar I had done for Jeff Lynne, he said, “I knew when I played that guitar that you did for Jeff, that you knew something.”
