George Hawley, a retired electrical engineer from Sarasota, was at one time the world’s leading authority on the effects of lightning on telephone transmission systems — for which he received a PhD in systems science. After service in the Marine Corps performed in exchange for his undergraduate education, he began a career in telecommunications at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill. Along the way, he and his first wife, Mary Kay, produced three ridiculously talented boys, the oldest but least gifted of whom grew up to be director of this conference. George and his wife Charlotte make their home in Sarasota.
