Alvy Ray Smith, Graphics Pioneer & Co-Founder, Pixar & George Dyson, Author, Science Historian (EG9)
May, 2015: Alvy Ray Smith and George Dyson discuss the origins of computation and its brilliant pioneers, such as Alan Turing. Dr. Alvy Ray Smith cofounded two successful companies, most notably Pixar; was first director of computer graphics at Lucasfilm; won two Academy Awards; wrote thesis at Stanford on cellular automata and self-reproducing machines; grows flowering plants on computers; and has two national book awards for scholarly, DNA-based genealogy. George Dyson spent three winters, starting at age 19, in a treehouse 95 feet up in a Douglas fir on the shores of Burrard Inlet in British Columbia, before settling down to become a historian of technology who has divided his time between building boats and writing books.
